Everyday life in Galle

Mornings can start with a swim, five minutes away on foot. The fishing boats come into Galle harbour, ten minutes’ walk away, and the fort’s cafés, galleries and ramparts are a short tuk-tuk ride.

At weekends, Unawatuna’s bay and the surf at Dewata Beach are close by, and the coastal train runs up to Colombo in about two and a half hours.

When to come

The south coast is at its driest and sunniest from December to April, the busiest months in Galle. From May to September the south-west monsoon brings more rain and rougher seas, and the town is quieter.
