A day in Unawatuna
Swim in the bay
The beach curves around a bay sheltered by a reef. From December to April the sea is usually calm enough for an easy swim.
Snorkel and dive
Dive centres on the bay take every level out to the reefs, rocky outcrops and old wrecks, where sea turtles and shoals of reef fish are common.
Visit the Peace Pagoda
The white Japanese Peace Pagoda stands on the Rumassala headland, looking back across the water to Galle Fort. Below it, a path drops to Jungle Beach, a small cove for snorkelling.
Eat by the sea
Cafés along the sand serve grilled fish, rice and curry and fresh juice from breakfast until late.
Why stay in Galle?
A whole villa
You book the whole villa, with its own bedrooms, kitchen and loft, rather than a room in a beach hotel.
Quiet nights
Back in the garden the evenings are quiet: the mango trees, the birds and a cool bedroom.
Galle on the doorstep
The harbour is ten minutes away on foot and the old fort about ten by tuk-tuk, so you can have Unawatuna's beach by day and the fort's cafés by night.
